Genesis Chapter 1 |
1In the beginning, God fashioned the sky and the earth; 2the earth was an empty wasteland, darkness upon the face of the deep, with God's breath hovering over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God named the light Day and the darkness he named Night; there was evening and there was morning: one day.
6Then God said, "Let there be a
dome in the midst of
the waters separating water from water." 7And God made the dome and
it separated the water that was below the dome from the water that was above
the dome. And it was so. 8And God named the dome Sky; and there was evening and
there was morning: a second day.
9Then God said, "Let the waters below the sky be gathered into one place so that
the dry land appears. And it was so. 10And God named the dry land Earth and the
gathering of the waters he named Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11Then
God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation --grasses producing seed and fruit
trees bearing fruit with seeds in it, according to their kinds -- upon the earth." And
it was so. 12And the earth sent up vegetation --grasses producing
seed, according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seeds in it, according to their
kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was
morning: a third day.
14Then God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night, let them be as signs for sacred seasons and for days and years: 15let them be as lights in the dome of the sky to shine upon the earth." And it was so . 16And God made the two great lights -- the greater light for the governance of the day, and the smaller light for the governance of the night -- and the stars. 17And God set them in the dome of the sky to shine upon the earth, 18and to rule over the day and the night and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning: a fourth day.
20Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures and let birds fly over the earth as far as the dome of the sky." 21And God fashioned the great sea creatures and all living creatures that dart about, with which the waters abound, according to their kind, and all the winged birds, according to their kind. And God saw that it was good. 22And God blessed them, "Be fertile and increase and fill the waters in the seas and let the birds increase on the earth." 23And there was evening and there was morning: a fifth day.
24Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures, according to their kind, cattle, creeping things and beasts of the earth, according to their kind. And it was so. 25And God made beasts of the earth, according to their kinds, and the cattle, according to their kind, and all the creeping things of the ground, according their kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, "Let us make Man in our image, after our likeness, that they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and the cattle and all the earth, and all the creeping things that creep on the earth." 27And God fashioned man in his own image, in the image of God he fashioned him; male and female he fashioned them. 28And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fertile and increase, fill the earth and master it: rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and all the living things that creep on the earth." 29And God said, "See, I give to you all seed-producing grasses on all the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit, for your food. 30And to all the creatures of the earth, to all the birds of the sky and to all the creeping things of the earth which have in them the breath of life, I give all the green plants for food." And it was so. 31And God saw all that he had made and how very good it was! And there was evening and there was morning: a sixth day.
2 1And the sky and the earth and all their host were completed. 2And God completed the works he had made by the seventh day and he rested on the seventh day from all the works he had made. 3God blessed the seventh day and made it holy for on it God rested from all his work, which he had done in creating. 4And these are the origins of the sky and the earth in their creation.
